She’s trying to make sense and justify something that has nothing to do with reason, it has to do with a desperate, deep, kind of love, which she has never, and will probably never, experience in her life.

I tend to be an actor that’s more visceral, wearing my emotions on my sleeve, and I was interested in playing someone who was trying desperately to be the voice of reason. I was intrigued by the notion that with this character you can’t give anything away about them for a long time. In regards to the character of Claire, she’s much more than meets the eye in the beginning. The audience then sees how everything begins to unfold while Elizabeth learns about herself. In ELIZABETH HARVEST, we are basically seeing a very brilliant scientist, played by Ciaran Hinds, who has married a young woman, played by Abbey Lee, and has brought her to his beautiful home where there are two servants there, myself and a wonderful British actor named Matthew Beard, and something is just…off.

Sebastian was very interested in making a movie that was a modern updating of that, but from the woman’s perspective. The perspective that’s interesting is that character has always been dealt with as this sort of sympathetic villain he’s doing these terrible things but there’s always this strange sympathy given to that character.

He gives her the key to the room and, of course, leaves and curiosity gets the best of her and when she goes into the room she sees the torture chamber. In “Bluebeard”, the story centers around a nobleman who brings his wife home to his castle and tells her everything that he owns is hers but there is one room of his that she can’t go into.

When director Sebastian Gutierrez brought up the idea of doing a modern update of “Bluebeard”, I was really drawn to the story.

To start things off, can you tell us a little about your latest role and how Claire fits into the story?Ĭarla Gugino: I am a big fan of Angela Carter who had a short story titled “The Bloody Chamber” which was basically a feminist take on “Bluebeard”. During their chat they discussed everything from her role as the elusive Claire, the notion of morality, and the feminist themes that the film incorporates. It’s especially draining when Gutierrez decides to explain everything via Elizabeth reading a journal. But as it nears the two-hour mark, the film becomes exhausting, shedding very little light on the futuristic implications of the story. She finds something far more horrifying inside than imaginable - though maybe more imaginable for viewers familiar with previous versions of Bluebeard, especially given that Henry’s profession is “scientist.” Of course, Gutierrez works some twists on the familiar premise, and one standout thrill of a chase scene employs Brian De Palma’s signature split screens. Most of all, there’s Henry, who, while giving Elizabeth a tour of their beautiful mansion, stops in front of a door and declares, “The only off-limits room is this one.”īut never mind that red flag, and never mind the warning, too, because a curious Elizabeth disobeys orders and enters the forbidden room. Even for an unassuming viewer, it’s immediately obvious that there’s a sinister energy in the air, from the shadowy house staff (played by Carla Gugino and Matthew Beard) to Elizabeth’s haunting manner of requesting a “light salad and chocolate milkshake” for lunch. In this contemporary retelling of the Bluebeard story, written and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez, Lee plays Elizabeth, the beautiful young bride of an aging plutocrat named Henry (Ciarán Hinds). The Neon Demon’s Abbey Lee stars in Elizabeth Harvest, yet another stylish yet empty thriller, one just about as punishing as Nicolas Winding Refn’s film about the vicious fashion world.
